Phil and Tom are keeping it a little shorter than normal, but that doesn't mean we have shortchanged anyone—especially the BCS National Championship game. Was Alabama's 21-0 victory over LSU the most boring game ever? See what we think. How about Nick Saban? Is he the greatest coach ever? We mix in a little Penn State coaching hire just to make sure there is some variety this week.
With the SEC rematch between No. 1 LSU and No. 2 Alabama almost set to be played out in the BCS National Championship, it's time to offer some thoughts and predictions on the game. Does Tom have a man-crush on Nick Saban? Sort of seems like it, but you'll have to listen for yourself to find out. The championship game is going to have a tough time living up to the offensive explosions we have see in the other BCS games. Phil and Tom also talk about the new coaching hire at Penn State, the merciful end to Ohio State's season and so much more.
Was Ohio State's NCAA punishment too harsh or too light? It seems no one can agree, but one thing is clear that Urban Meyer won't be playing for any championships in his first season in Columbus. How about the BCS National Championship? There doesn't seem to be too much buzz surrounding this SEC/regional game. Is it possible the rest of the nation will tune this one out because they just don't care? Phil and Tom also take a look at the three bowl games they are most looking forward to watching between now and Jan. 2, as well as look at some of the interesting coaching hires (and some that have not named a coach yet). Enjoy and Merry Christmas!
Like every other college football fan in the country, Phil and Tom discuss the BCS National Championship match up of two SEC teams. Oklahoma State and Stanford might have an argument to play LSU, but it's hard to argue against Alabama as the No. 2 team in the nation. Of course we take a quick look back at all of the action from last week, including the exciting Big Ten Championship game. It's also a good time to chat about some of the bowls that we are looking forward to most (and we tell you which game is a dog). With the Heisman Trophy announcement this weekend, Phil and Tom are really wondering if there's really that much suspense since it looks like Baylor's Robert Griffin III might be a runaway selection.
Since it seems inevitable that we are going to get a rematch of LSU-Alabama in the BCS National Championship, we try to conjure up some ways to get excited about seeing these two SEC powers go head-to-head. Is it the BCS' fault that we will have this game, or should we just blame the other BCS conferences for not producing a legitimate contender for the title? Despite Ohio State losing to Michigan in the season finale, Phil and the Buckeyes are in a pretty good mood following the hiring of Urban Meyer. We can't forget all of the conference championship games this weekend and some of the de facto title games being played. There's also the hiring of Mike Leach at Washington State that wasn't a huge surprise, but also feels odd considering it's Wazzu taking the leap of faith with Leach. Hey, that's two shows in one week. Enjoy.
With the big, but not-so-shocking, announcement Monday that Urban Meyer will come out of retirement and coach The Ohio State University, it was only natural to get Phil on the show and talk about the Buckeyes. So this is our "Urban Meyer Special." The regular show will return Thursday morning.
Since so many of our loyal listeners have voiced their opinion to us about Phil's dreadful audio quality, we have made a switch that we think all of you will like. As for the show, well, it was necessary to discuss the Urban Meyer to Ohio State rumors (despite Phil's best judgment). Like most OSU fans, Phil is on board with the move. Luke Fickell got his shot, but it hasn't worked in Columbus ... so some new blood in Buckeye Nation is a must. We also look at the big upsets of last weekend, and give a good rundown on the rivalry games this weekend—including the Backyard Brawl and The Game. We also give you our pick for the other rivalry game that we are looking forward to most this weekend. We hope you enjoy the new and improved Eye And Eer: College Football Podcast.
Naturally, Phil and Tom couldn't do a show without discussing the Penn State/Joe Paterno situation some more. We're not necessarily on the same page when it comes to who Penn State should be looking for in its next coach. Is it possible Penn State's image is damaged so badly that this isn't he attractive job it once was? Is it also possible that recruits will run from Penn State? Hey Pitt, this might be your chance. Of course we look back at last week's Oregon-Stanford game, what we have coming up this week (including Penn State at Ohio State). There's also a little discussion about Bob Davie leaving ESPN to take over at New Mexico. Who saw that one coming?
We're talking about what everyone else in college football is talking about today – Notre Dame vs. Maryland. Not really. We're talking about the Penn State nightmare. How did Jerry Sandusky allegedly do all these horrible things with no one reporting it or knowing about it. What happens next and how this makes every other scandal look pretty meaningless now. That's not all we cover. Of course, we get one last chance to talk about the LSU-Alabama game from last week and look ahead to this week's big showdown in Palo Alto, Calif., with Oregon and Stanford. Let's hope we can get back to the action on the field. There's been way too much off-the-field stuff this year.
The LSU-Alabama game this Saturday is what everyone is talking about—and rightfully so. This game has the makings of a titanic clash, but will the on-field action live up to the hype? We actually think it might. What else do we discuss on this week's podcast? How about Braxton Miller's late touchdown pass against Wisconsin that not only saved Ohio State's season, but maybe even Luke Fickell's time with the Buckeyes. We also hit on the triple OT classic with Stanford and USC and a few other great games from last week. As I've already mentioned, there's one huge game this week, but we couldn't pass up the chance to look at some other nice match ups this weekend. As for the weekly quick hitters, we talk WVU's lawsuit, Case Keenum, Notre Dame and Boise State. You won't want to miss all of that fun.
So is WVU going to the Big 12 or not? Well, when we recorded the lastest Eye and Eer podcast it seemed pretty clear the Mountaineers were going to replace Missouri. Now it appears that done deal is not so done. Man do we hate all of this expansion crap. Just do it and let's all move forward. Who the hell cares about the rest of the show. I'm just depressed now.
It's become evident with the release of the first BCS Rankings that the national title race is down to the Alabama-LSU winner vs. the Oklahoma-Oklahoma State winner. Or will it be that simple? Tune in and we'll explain some of the options. Of course, another great start by Michigan is ruined by Michigan State. So maybe it doesn't matter who coaches the Wolverines. We also look at some good games for this weekend, including the Wisconsin-Michigan State game. It's also time to tout our quick hitters, which includes how prepared Missouri is to join the SEC and the future of Houston Nutt at Ole Miss.
We just can't escape the grips of conference expansion, especially since West Virginia and the Big East seems to be caught in the middle of it. The picture remains fuzzy, but WVU keeps winning and the SEC hasn't publicly made an offer to anyone. Thankfully, Phil was able to participate in this week's show. With a little help from his friends he stepped off the ledge instead of hurling himself off to a certain death. Once again, we look at the best games from last week's and the good ones for this weekend.
Early in the week it was rumored that SEC commissioner Mike Slive was in Morgantown learning some particulars about the Mountaineers. Allegedly he was so impressed that he wants to make WVU the 14th member of the conference. However, there's this issue with Missouri. What's going to happen to WVU? I guess you'll need to listen to this week's podcast with Phil and Tom. Of course we also hit on the Ohio State Buckeyes' woes and the future of Luke Fickell, along with last week's best games and what we are looking forward to most this weekend — starting with the Red River Rivalry. Tune in. Turn it up. Enjoy!
Is it possible that Clemson's Dabo Swinney (who has been much maligned by your humble hosts at Eye And Eer) is building a 2011 resume that could finish with a Coach of the Year honor? Well, the Tigers have made it through two-thirds of an unbearable stretch by beating Auburn and Florida State. Now the Tigers must go on the road against No. 11 Virginia Tech. The winning streak is about to come to an end. Looking ahead, Ohio State freshman quarterback Braxton Miller gets his first real challenge as the Buckeyes host Michigan State, while over at Camp Randall No. 8 Nebraska plays its first Big Ten game as a nine-point underdog. Another interesting game this weekend is clearly Florida and Alabama. So far Will Muschamp has pushed all of the right buttons, but now he has to face his mentor Nick Saban.
